Job summary

Prospero Teaching is seeking a Functional Skills Tutor to deliver English and Maths for students not in full-time education, in Hexham. You will design personalised lessons, track progress and provide regular updates to families, while building a supportive learning environment.

The role offers up to 15 hours per week, competitive pay up to £30 per hour, and access to our CPD accredited courses and Resource Hub to support professional development.

Qualifications

• Experience with functional skills English and Maths.
• Available to travel to Hexham, Northumberland on a regular basis.
• Hold the right to work in the UK.
• Have an enhanced DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to apply for a new one.
• Be able to reference the last two years of education/employment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver one-to-one tuition in Functional Skills Maths and/or English.
• Develop and implement personalised lesson plans addressing individual learning gaps.
• Monitor student progress and provide regular, constructive feedback to students and their families.
• Create a supportive and motivating learning environment to help students rebuild confidence in learning.
• Complete daily attendance and weekly reports.

Functional Skills Tutor - English and Maths

At Prospero Teaching, we work in partnership with Local Councils, schools, and SEND teams across the UK to support young people who are unable to access full‑time education. Our goal is to match students with dedicated tutors who can deliver personalised one‑to‑one or small group sessions, helping each learner reach their full potential through tailored educational support.

We are currently experiencing a high demand for Functional Skills Tutors in Hexham to support students in Maths and English. These learners are not currently accessing full‑time education due to permanent or temporary exclusion and require additional support to re‑engage with learning. This role is ideal for tutors who are patient, adaptable, and committed to creating a positive learning environment. You will work closely with students to build their confidence, overcome barriers to education, and help them achieve their academic goals through tailored, engaging sessions.

Position Details

• Pay rate up to £30 per hour depending on qualification and/or experience
• Up to 15 hours per week per student
• Start date: September 2025
• Location: Hexham

• Be able to reference the last two years of education/employment
