Job description

Empower and inspire students with special educational needs, in a supportive and dynamic learning environment as a Full-Time Teaching Assistant in Whitehaven.

Sense Education is looking to appoint a compassionate and skilled Teaching Assistant to join a dedicated team at a special school in Whitehaven. As a Full-Time Teaching Assistant in Whitehaven you will have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The ideal candidate will have experience supporting individuals with SEND, strong behaviour management skills, and familiarity with alternative communication methods.

The Role:
  1. Provide tailored support to students with SEND, helping them engage in their learning and achieve personal goals.
  2. Assist the classroom teacher with lesson preparation and provide one-on-one or small-group support as needed.
  3. Implement and adapt alternative communication methods to support students’ unique needs.
  4. Maintain a positive and structured classroom environment, using effective behaviour management techniques.
  5. Collaborate closely with teachers, therapists, and other staff to create an inclusive, nurturing setting for all students.
Person Specification:
  1. Qualifications: Ideally a Teaching Assistant (TA) qualification or other relevant certifications. Degree level education is a bonus.
  2. Experience: Previous experience working with individuals with SEND.
  3. Skills: Knowledge of alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS, AAC) and strong behaviour management skills.
  4. Attributes: Patient, empathetic, and dedicated to supporting individual learning needs.
School and Logistics:
  1. Location: Specialist SEND provision in Whitehaven.
  2. Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM (part time applications also considered).
