Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Team Lead

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibilities

PURPOSE OF POST: To ensure all activities and facilities operate efficiently and safely, exceeding customer expectations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Ensure the comfort, safety, and enjoyment of all RGU SPORT users.
  • Work with others to meet sales, membership, usage, and retention targets, and stay informed about them.
  • Follow service standards and procedures focused on operational efficiency, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.
  • Perform reception duties such as sales, answering calls, bookings, payments, receipts, and preventing unauthorized use. Assist with opening, cashing up, and closing procedures.
  • Provide advice and guidance to customers and colleagues through regular interactions. Supervise pool and facility users to ensure safety at all times.
  • Provide gym instruction and sports coaching as required, during or outside shift hours, without additional pay when on shift.
  • Ensure equipment and courts are set up safely and on time; report maintenance issues.
  • Administer first aid, perform pool rescues, and carry out resuscitation as needed (training provided monthly).
  • Maintain basic knowledge of health and safety protocols, including fire evacuations, COSHH, manual handling, risk assessments, and PPE usage.
  • Attend regular training and personal development sessions (minimum 2 hours per month). Keep qualifications updated as needed.
  • Build effective relationships with colleagues within RGU SPORT and across the university.
  • Regularly clean specified areas as required.
  • Deputise for the Team Lead when appropriate.
  • Perform administrative tasks as required by RGU SPORT management.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) or equivalent, or able to gain during probation.
  • First Aid Certificate.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to relate well to students, colleagues, clubs, and the community. Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and bespoke IT packages.
  • Knowledge of current developments in sport, exercise, fitness, and leisure industries.

Experience

  • Experience in a sport, exercise, and fitness environment.
  • Experience in customer-focused roles within busy reception settings and team environments.

Unsociable Hours

  • Role involves shift work from 5:30 am to 10:30 pm, including weekends.
  • Punctuality is essential.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Level 1 or 2 swimming teacher qualification.
  • Pool Plant Operators Certificate.
  • Additional fitness instructing or coaching qualifications.
  • CWI (Climbing Wall Instructor) certificate.

Experience

  • Experience in commercial fitness settings.
  • Experience in sports coaching or fitness instructing.
