Job summary

A welcoming primary school in Reading is seeking a proactive, practical, and dependable School Caretaker to manage day-to-day site operations, security, and maintenance on an ongoing, full-time basis starting ASAP.

As School Caretaker you will work with the Headteacher and School Business Manager to ensure safety, health and safety compliance, and contractor liaison while handling routine repairs and equipment maintenance. The role offers split-shift or straight day patterns.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in general maintenance, caretaking, trades, or facilities upkeep (school setting advantageous)
• Practical DIY skills (basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, mechanical troubleshooting)
• Good knowledge of Health & Safety at Work practices and COSHH regulations
• Physical fitness and willingness to undertake manual handling tasks
• Active DBS Check (Update Service) or willingness to apply

Responsibilities

• Perform daily opening and closing procedures, set security alarms, and maintain site perimeter integrity
• Carry out routine minor repairs, maintenance, painting, and DIY tasks across rooms and grounds
• Conduct health and safety checks (fire alarms, emergency lighting, legionella testing, playground checks)
• Manage heating, lighting, and boiler systems to maintain learning conditions
• Supervise cleaning staff and liaise with external contractors and technicians
• Respond to emergency call-outs, weather clearance, and security incidents
