Front-End Designer / Developer for Visual Storytelling
Front-End Designer / Developer for Visual Storytelling

1 month ago Be among the first 25 applicants

We are looking for a creative and technically skilled Front-End Designer / Developer to join our newsroom and collaborate on ambitious investigative, data-driven, and multimedia storytelling projects. You’ll be part of a cross-disciplinary team working to expose truths, explain complexity, and hold power to account - crafting innovative digital experiences that amplify the impact of our journalism whilst elevating and pushing our technical capabilities

This role is ideal for someone who can think like a designer, code like a developer, and tell stories like a journalist. You’ll partner with reporters, data analysts, other developers and the design team to translate deep investigative work into dynamic, accessible, and compelling digital narratives.

From scrollytelling features to data-driven visual narratives, you’ll help shape how readers experience our stories online—designing and building bespoke editorial projects that elevate reporting through design, code, and thoughtful user experience.

Responsibilities

  • Build and design custom editorial features and interactive articles that enhance reporting and engage readers.
  • Collaborate closely with journalists, editors, designers and developers to translate reporting into compelling digital experiences.
  • Develop the use of AI2HTML to create web-based animated graphics
  • Integrate animation, data visualisation, and multimedia elements into editorial layouts.
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate on designs based on editorial goals and real-time feedback.
  • Optimize interactive features for performance, accessibility, and editorial deadlines.
  • Contribute to newsroom discussions about innovative ways to present complex information visually.

Qualifications

  • Experience in front-end development, visual journalism, or editorial/interaction design.
  • Familiarity with animation or storytelling libraries (e.g. Shorthand, GSAP, Lottie, Scrollama).
  • A keen eye for design, layout, and visual hierarchy, especially in a journalistic context.
  • Experience working in a newsroom or on editorial products is highly valued.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards and performance optimization in web development.
  • Proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git) and collaborative workflows.
  • Keeping on top of latest trends in both design and front-end development
  • Are passionate about journalism and believe in the power of visual storytelling to inform, explain, and engage.
  • Thrive at the intersection of design, development, and editorial thinking.
  • Follow best practices in visual journalism and enjoy experimenting with new digital formats.
  • Work well on deadline and can adapt to fast-changing editorial needs.
