Role Summary

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for forensic investigations of existing buildings, assessing issues, undertaking structural risk assessments, and supporting the development of building safety case reports. You will conduct site inspections, review risk assessments under Building Regulations requirement A3, interpret data from external wall investigations, monitor projects, and ensure structural safety in buildings.

The Candidate

Previous experience within a Structural Engineering Consultancy, delivering services such as:

  • Structural scheme design
  • Optioneering and justification of structural options
  • Knowledge of disproportionate collapse solutions and detail drawings
  • Experience in structural refurbishment works and major extensions
  • Experience in appraisal of existing structures
  • Structural Risk Assessment
  • Knowledge of structural safety guidance and standards, especially for residential buildings, including Eurocodes (EC1-1-7), British Standards (BS8110, BS5950, BS5268, BS5628), and an understanding of BS 7974 PD 1, PD 3, PD 7
  • Ability to design and specify remedial works for existing buildings
  • Knowledge of geotechnics and interpretation of geo-environmental investigation reports

Additional beneficial knowledge:

  • Understanding of the Building Safety Act, including Gateway 2 & 3 processes
  • Knowledge of external wall systems and façade engineering, including PAS9980 methodology
  • Understanding of fire protection and fire analysis in structures
  • Knowledge of external fire spread analysis

Essential Skills

  • Extensive experience in delivering structural engineering for new builds, extensions, and refurbishments, ideally residential
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and report writing skills
  • Understanding of building systems, components, and their impact on performance and safety
  • Knowledge of risk assessment methodologies
  • Ability to provide competent person advice when required

Qualifications and Memberships

BSc / BEng / MSc / MEng in Structural Engineering or relevant field

Membership of a relevant institution, such as IStructE, ICE, or working towards membership

In addition to qualifications and experience, strong interpersonal skills, report writing, and knowledge of UK regulations are essential.
