Your Role as a Chaplain

As a Chaplain at HMP Altcourse, you will provide faith-specific care, spiritual support, and pastoral guidance to prisoners and staff. You will collaborate with a multi-faith Chaplaincy Team to meet the spiritual needs of the community while fostering inclusivity and respect for all traditions.

This role involves facilitating worship, study, and prayer opportunities, as well as delivering faith-based and non-faith-based programs that aid rehabilitation and personal growth. You will help create a supportive prison culture, promote rehabilitation, and encourage offenders towards self-improvement.

You will also liaise with local faith groups and agencies to support offenders' resettlement after release, providing advice and services as part of the Chaplaincy Team.

The Ideal Candidate
  • The Free Church Chaplain will provide religious care for prisoners and staff within the Free Church Christian tradition and pastoral care for all, regardless of faith.
  • They will work with colleagues to ensure delivery of the 'Faith and Pastoral Care' specification and broader chaplaincy work, including faith and non-faith courses.
  • Engage with and build contacts within their faith community to aid offender resettlement.
  • This is a non-operational role without line management responsibilities.
  • Responsibilities include acting as a faith advisor, facilitating worship and religious programs, contributing to policy development, mentoring, and working with diverse faith and social groups.
  • Previous experience in a prison or similar environment, familiarity with fundraising, and ability to work independently and in teams are desirable.
