Job summary

trg. is looking for a Founding Engineer to join the AI Infrastructure team in London. You will own core backend systems and ML pipelines from day one, working directly with the founders on production-grade infrastructure.

You will build training and fine-tuning pipelines, handle inference and model serving, and develop evals and benchmarking. The role offers founding-team equity and a chance to influence product direction.

Founding Engineer, AI Infrastructure (Seed-Stage Start-up)

London, in office 5 days a week | Up to £180k base + founding equity

The company

A well-funded, seed-stage AI start-up building developer infrastructure for machine learning. The product handles some of the hardest parts of working with models, so engineering teams can get results without large research teams behind them.

It’s a small, technical founding team in London, the company is moving fast, and the founders are in conversations about the next round.

The role

You’ll be one of a small group of founding engineers, working directly with the founders. Most of the work (around 90%) is backend, and there’s very little UI. You’ll get real ownership and tech-lead scope from day one, across:

• Training and fine-tuning pipelines
• Inference and model serving
• Evals and benchmarking, built properly for production
• The infrastructure that ties it all together

What we’re looking for

• Strong backend or ML engineering experience shipping production systems
• Exposure to data or models at production scale, from a company building real ML (not a thin wrapper around a third-party API)
• Hands-on experience with evals and benchmarking, or a strong interest in owning them
• Comfort with start-up pace: you’re autonomous and happy with ambiguity
• Bonus: RL pipelines, fine-tuning, LoRA, or a background at an AI lab or model company
• Founding-team equity with a clear path to grow your stake
• Real influence over the product and the technical direction
• A hard technical problem with clear demand in the market
