Job summary

Government Recruitment Service, on behalf of the Justice AI Unit, seeks a forward‑thinking AI software engineer to design and deploy AI-native products within the Ministry of Justice. You will work across courts, prisons and probation, owning end‑to‑end delivery from problem identification to deployment and scaling adoption.

Qualifications

  • Experience building and deploying AI-native software in production environments.
  • Experience owning all parts of the software and AI stack, including frontend, backend, database, AI and ML.
  • Experience building solutions such as predictive models, LLM workflows, scheduling algorithms and data pipelines.
  • Ability to work and thrive in complex organisational contexts.
  • Up to date on the latest developments in AI.
  • Experience with our stack: NextJS, FastAPI, Postgres.
  • Experience with LLM observability and evaluation tools such as Langfuse.
  • Cloud and infrastructure experience such as Terraform and Azure.
  • Entrepreneurial or startup experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high-impact AI products, models and agents that will be widely used across the Ministry of Justice.
  • Work directly in the field, such as courts, prisons and probation, to understand user needs and operational challenges, and co-build with users.
  • Own end-to-end delivery from identifying the problem, building the product, deploying it and scaling adoption.

We are the Justice AI Unit, a small, fast-moving and innovative team within the Ministry of Justice. We build and ship products quickly across the Ministry of Justice, using AI to enhance, not replace, human judgement, with the aim of delivering better outcomes, faster services and greater fairness for all. This is a nationally based role, with our home base in London and regular attendance expected at least once per week for candidates not currently based there.
