Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

National Energy System Operator (NESO) is now looking for a RESP Whole Energy Forecasting Analyst, to be part of our growing Regional Energy Strategic Planning (RESP) team. This exciting role will allow you to play a crucial role in leading the development of approaches to whole energy regional pathways modelling and analysis, working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. You will model and analyse demand and supply scenarios at the distribution level, across electricity, gas, hydrogen, and sectors such as heat, transport, industry, and consumers.

You will play a key role in developing transparent, consistent assumptions with industry experts and leading inputs into the RESP methodology. As an analyst, you will build understanding of different parts of the energy industry, conduct research and analysis, and explain results to stakeholders.

This RESP Whole Energy Forecasting Analyst position will be highly visible within NESO and the wider industry, providing opportunities to engage with a broad range of stakeholders.

This role can be based in Wokingham or Warwick, with hybrid working arrangements from office and home. We are open to full-time, part-time, and flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Conduct modelling and analysis to develop regional whole energy supply & demand pathways across sectors such as heat, transport, industry, and consumers, working with cross-functional teams to agree assumptions and approaches.
  2. Lead development of forecasting approaches and assumptions with energy experts across at least two sectors.
  3. Create regional whole energy pathways from diverse local energy datasets, ensuring coherence with national plans and contributing to the RESP methodology.
  4. Engage with external stakeholders through bi-laterals, technical groups, and workshops to inform modelling and analysis.
  5. Stay updated on emerging analysis and modelling techniques in the energy industry and apply these to whole energy analysis.
  6. Collaborate with other NESO analysis/modelling teams, sharing best practices and seeking expert advice for complex projects.
  7. Provide guidance and training within the team.

About you

We’re seeking someone who:

  • Has a broad understanding of the energy sector, with experience in energy planning at the distribution network level across at least one energy vector (heat, transport, industry, consumer).
  • Possesses strong analytical skills, with experience in holistic energy system analysis.
  • Can conduct research using diverse sources, prioritise questions, and stay informed on technological and social developments.
  • Is a structured problem solver, especially with data-related challenges.
  • Has excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Is proficient in analytical software (e.g., R, SQL, MATLAB, Excel, VBA) and comfortable with large bespoke software and data science tools (e.g., Python).
What you'll get

A salary between £51,000 - £66,000, dependent on experience, plus a performance bonus, 26 days annual leave, and a contributory pension scheme with company matching up to 12%. We promote a supportive environment focused on professional growth, diversity, and well-being.
