Job summary

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant in Foot and Ankle with a specialist interest in diabetic foot care. The role covers elective and urgent foot and ankle surgery, outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and multidisciplinary meetings with podiatry and diabetic medicine colleagues.

The post includes supervision of junior staff, teaching, audit and research, and participation in on-call trauma and orthopaedic service provision.

Qualifications

• MRCS/FRCS or equivalent and a registerable medical degree.
• ATLS provider status.
• Fellowship in foot and ankle surgery or equivalent.

Job description

Consultant post in the Foot and Ankle service at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, with a specialist interest in diabetic foot care and a brief to grow the service. The work covers elective and urgent foot and ankle surgery, outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and multidisciplinary meetings with podiatry and diabetic medicine colleagues. It is part of a team of three foot and ankle consultants and includes general trauma on-call. Fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery and full GMC registration decide fit.

What the job involves

• Lead and expand the orthopaedic-led diabetic foot service
• Deliver elective and urgent foot and ankle care, including complex diabetic foot cases
• Run outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, MDT meetings and specialist consultations
• Work with diabetic medicine, podiatry, vascular surgery, radiology and infection services
• Share collective consultant responsibility for the trauma and orthopaedic service, including the on-call rota
• Help plan future service developments and care pathways
• Take continuing responsibility for patients in your care and provide free statements on any claims against the Trust
• Supervise junior staff professionally and educationally
• Teach postgraduate doctors, undergraduates and staff of all grades
• Take part in clinical audit, clinical governance and research
• Meet national CPD requirements, including the weekly half-day educational session
• Deputise for absent colleagues to keep patient care continuous

Registration & licences

• Full GMC registration, including licence to practise

Experience

• Comprehensive knowledge and experience across orthopaedic and trauma surgery
• Fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery
• Previous management experience
• Evidence of teaching junior doctors and nurses
• Regular involvement in clinical audit and familiarity with the audit process

Skills & knowledge

• Specialist diabetic foot knowledge and treatment competencies
• Ability to supervise trainees and a strong commitment to undergraduate education
• Willingness to take on a departmental management role
• Ability to work equally within a multidisciplinary team and liaise with other specialties
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, coping with stress, good discipline and motivation
