Food Sustainability Project Coordinator

Location: Mainly our head office in E12, with travel to other venues around the borough of Newham as needed.

Salary: £36,934 per annum

Hours: 36 hours per week

Vacancy Type: 4-year fixed term, funded by the Lottery Community Fund

About the Renewal Programme

For over five decades, the Renewal Programme has been a trusted community cornerstone in the London Borough of Newham, addressing poverty, isolation, and disadvantage.

Role overview

This role supports sustainable living, reduces food waste, tackles local food insecurity, and fosters community connections. You will ensure our food provision extends beyond immediate needs to promote wellbeing and community support, aligning with our Lottery-funded RenewALL Hub proposal.

Your main responsibility will be to secure regular surplus food donations by developing partnerships with supermarkets, shops, restaurants, and redistribution organizations like the Newham Food Alliance, Felix Project, and Feeding Britain. You will manage the use of this food across various services, including the foodbank, food pantry, warm meals program, and cooking classes, involving stock management, menu planning, and coordination with staff to meet environmental, health, and cultural needs.

Key responsibilities
  • Food Supply & Partnerships: Secure surplus food donations, build partnerships to ensure consistent supply, and maintain culturally appropriate, nutritious food options.
  • Food Service Delivery: Lead the management of the RenewALL Food Pantry, oversee operations, volunteer involvement, and integrate support pathways.
  • Sustainable Food Initiatives & Logistics: Manage cargo bike redistribution, promote low-waste practices, and organize workshops on food waste reduction.
  • Volunteer Leadership & Team Management: Recruit, train, and support volunteers; develop rotas and foster an inclusive volunteer culture.
  • Compliance, Monitoring & Resource Management: Ensure compliance with safety standards, manage budgets, and maintain records.
  • Innovation & Development: Explore revenue opportunities linked to food and transport initiatives and employment opportunities through cargo bike deliveries.
  • Project Awareness & Marketing: Collaborate with marketing to promote campaigns and increase project visibility through partnerships and community engagement.
