Role Overview

WSP is seeking an Associate Director / Associate / Principal Fluvial Geomorphologist / Hydromorphologist within the Catchment Science team. The role focuses on specialisms such as fluvial geomorphology, Water Framework Directive (WFD), natural flood management (NFM), nature-based solutions (NbS), weir removal, river and catchment enhancement, and biodiversity net gain (BNG) for watercourses. You will play a key role in delivering our growth strategy and mentoring team members.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to shape your role, contribute to diverse projects, and support the growth of our Hydromorphology Service area. You will work within a team of technical specialists and collaborate across various service lines, engaging in projects across sectors like water, transport, energy, and habitat restoration.

Responsibilities include:

  • Taking ownership of hydromorphology growth initiatives
  • Undertaking geomorphology assessments
  • Providing technical support and mentorship
  • Developing training materials and proposals
  • Leading watercourse assessments and river enhancement design
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
  • Innovating tools and contributing to business development
  • Producing high-quality reports and managing project schedules and budgets
  • Mentoring junior staff and fostering professional growth
  • Building relationships across the consultancy to enhance service offerings

Candidate Profile:

  • Proven experience in fluvial geomorphology and WFD, including project management and team leadership
  • Relevant degree (BSc or MSc) in environmental science or geography
  • Knowledge of UK/EU water legislation and biodiversity policies
  • Experience with WFD assessments and river design
  • Membership of CIWEM, CIEEM, RGS; chartership preferred but WSP supports development
  • Strong communication, report writing, and collaboration skills
