Fluid Systems Engineer - Current Class Systems, Services - Submarines

An opportunity has arisen for a Fluid Systems Engineer (FSE) to join our Services Systems department at Rolls-Royce Submarines (RRSL) in Derby.

The Current Class Systems (CCS) team are responsible for maintaining key safety, design, and operational documentation for in-service submarines, as well as providing responses to technical queries relating to the in-service submarine flotilla. The role of a FSE is integrating individual components into a reliable and functional system, therefore we often we act as an integrator; combining the deep technical knowledge of different disciplines to form a well-balanced justification for continuous operation of submarines at-sea.

The role of FSE is unique since it provides an opportunity to work across multiple disciplines and generate a broad understanding of how the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) functions. The team you will be joining has a diverse range of experience; this provides an opportunity to learn from senior engineers as well as mentor aspiring engineers who are earlier in their career. The role is based in Derby, but the work often presents the opportunity for travel around the UK to different MoD sites.

What you will be doing:

With this attractive opportunity you will get a chance to:
  • Generate responses to in-service submarine technical queries by working with teams that have a deep technical knowledge in a range of subjects.
  • Update and improve nuclear safety case documentation to provide an improvement submarine capability and availability.
  • Read and interpret Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and complete fluid systems design calculations to verify fluid system performance.
  • Interface directly with the Rolls-Royce Site Offices (Devonport, Barrow and Faslane) and provide advice to expedite submarine build and maintenance activities.

  • Be qualified to at least degree level in a relevant (engineering) discipline.
  • Understand nuclear safety case methods, principles, structures and management processes.
  • Understand Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics to aid in basic analytical problem solving.
  • Have had previous experience with requirements capture and basic task planning.
  • Confidently and pro-actively engage within internal and externals stakeholders.
