The Opportunity

The Mechanical Engineering Function at Leonardo Luton is looking to recruit a Fluid Dynamics (Pressure) engineer to join the existing team. The engineer will be responsible for conducting fluid dynamics pressure analysis and testing, communicating the results, and advising on all aspects of pressure engineering activities. The role involves working with multi-disciplinary project teams across the Luton Leonardo Electronic Warfare Business.

What you will do:

The role will involve the following activities but not limited to:

  • Analyze and assess mechanical designs for pressure performance and safety against requirements using circuit diagrams, pressure analysis software (Automation Studio – preferred), CFD techniques (Icepak and Fluent – preferred), and hand calculations.
  • Report on technical matters to a Leonardo Competent Person Pressure Systems, providing guidance and advice on pressure/cooling strategies and design improvements.
  • Support the selection of manufacturing technologies and materials based on mechanical engineering understanding.
  • Generate and maintain technical files and reports for approval.
  • Verify design data and change notices for equipment.
  • Support product development through design, testing, risk management, certification, and in-service support within budget and schedule.
  • Support visits and meetings at other Leonardo sites, suppliers, and customers.
  • Conduct fluid dynamics and pressure experiments within a laboratory environment.
  • Manage laboratory pressure test equipment and maintenance, supporting production pressure tests.
  • Promote safe working practices and manage related risk assessments and hazardous substances.

What we are looking for:

  • Degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent recognition.
  • Competent Person status in Pressure Systems.
  • Knowledge of Fluid Dynamics or Pressure analysis, with experience in extreme environments, electronics packaging, and relevant software.
  • Experience with environmental testing methods and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of legislation and standards including Def Stan 00-970, HSE Regulations, Pressure Equipment Regulations, and environmental laws.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Practical skills in assembly, testing, and repair of small mechanical and fluid devices.
  • Knowledge of safety inspection requirements and fault reporting.
  • Team-oriented with integrity and a business focus on cost, quality, and schedule.
