Job summary

MEC Consulting Group Ltd is recruiting a Flood Modeller to join the Flood Risk and Drainage team. Hybrid role with offices in Leicester, Birmingham or Nottingham (Leicester preferred).

You will model hydraulics (1D/2D), calibrate Flood Modeller/TUFLOW models and contribute to drainage strategies across UK public and private sectors. We welcome applicants with FEH/ReFH/WinFAP knowledge, strong reporting skills and a track record in UK consultancy.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, or related discipline.
  • Experience in hydraulic modelling (1D/2D) and flood risk management.
  • Proficiency with Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, or similar modelling software.
  • Knowledge of hydrology methods (FEH, ReFH, WinFAP).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Support preparation of FRAs, SWMPs and Drainage Strategies.
  • Progress towards chartership (CEng, IEng or CIWEM).
  • Experience with GIS packages (ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo).
  • Knowledge of drainage design software; Causeway Flow.
  • Previous UK consultancy experience in water/infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake hydraulic flood modelling to assess flood risk for developments.
  • Develop and calibrate hydraulic models using Flood Modeller or TUFLOW.
  • Input into design of SuDS and mitigation measures.
  • Analyse rainfall, river flow and hydrological data to inform outputs.
  • Liaise with clients, authorities and regulators.
  • Prepare technical reports and deliverables.
  • Contribute to proposals and bids as required.

About the role

MEC is a multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy, delivering services for private and public sector projects across residential, commercial, industrial, retail, leisure, education, and healthcare. Operating nationally from offices in Birmingham, Brighton, Leicester and Nottingham, we provide expert guidance for a wide range of clients.

We are seeking a talentedFlood Modeller to join our expanding Flood Risk and Drainage team. This role can be hybrid and based out of our offices in either Leicester, Birmingham, or Nottingham, however Leicester is preferred.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong technical background in hydrology and hydraulic modelling to support a wide range of flood risk, drainage, and infrastructure projects. You will be working on both public and private sector developments, contributing to innovative solutions that help manage flood risk and promote sustainable design.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Undertake hydraulic flood modelling to assess flood risk and inform development proposals.
  • Develop and calibrate hydraulic models using software such as HEC-RAS.
  • Provide input into the design of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and mitigation measures.
  • Analyse rainfall, river flow, and hydrological data to inform project outputs.
  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, and regulatory bodies (including the Environment Agency).
  • Prepare clear, concise technical reports and deliverables.
  • Contribute to project proposals and bids as required.
Key Skills & Attributes:
  • Degree or equivalentin Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in hydraulic modelling (1D/2D) and flood risk management.
  • Proficiency with hydraulic modelling software (Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, or similar).
