Overview

Flood Defence Team Member, Environment Agency. £25,308 rising to £27,293 for Team Member Level 2C after 2 years subject to satisfactory performance. Location: Romsey. Permanent, full-time role. Grade: Team Member Level 2A.

Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain and respond to flood and coastal risk management assets to safeguard communities.
  • Tackle incidents and emergencies related to flooding and other environmental challenges as part of a 24/7 standby roster.
  • Contribute to initiatives such as installing flood barriers, building sandbag walls, deploying high-volume pumps and providing assistance to affected communities.
  • Utilise a wide range of tools and equipment, including chainsaws, strimmers/brush cutters, heavy plant machinery, boats, and more.
  • Participate in structural maintenance, vegetation management, small construction projects, soft engineering, beach maintenance, and culvert and grille clearances.
  • Operate, maintain, and respond to assets ranging from large flood relief channels and flood storage reservoirs to local flood defences, in urban and rural environments.
  • Work with a mix of asset operation, maintenance (e.g., vegetation control, small construction), and incident response, using tools from hand tools to larger ride-on plant and tractors.
What you’ll need
  • A passion for the outdoors and a genuine commitment to protecting the environment.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions across urban and rural environments.
  • A valid UK manual driving licence and the ability to travel to your base depot within 60 minutes to respond to incidents.
  • Literacy and numeracy skills, willingness to learn in-house systems and use IT devices.
  • Some understanding of site health and safety requirements; full training will be provided.
  • No prior experience required; new entrants will be enrolled in the Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship and provided with training and mentoring.
Where you will work and how you’ll work

You will travel to your depot to check in daily and then operate in smaller teams within a defined geographical area to carry out field tasks.
