Job description

Start Date: September 2025 Hours: Typically 8:30am – 3:30pm (Flexible, ad-hoc shifts available) Pay: From £13.89/hour If you're looking for a role that brings purpose, connection, and variety to your working week, this opportunity could be just what you're looking for. Axcis Education is proud to support a remarkable special school in the BS30 area of South Gloucestershire. This all-through setting caters to children and young people aged 4 to 19 with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), often alongside complex medical needs or behaviours that challenge. It’s a school where care and compassion come first, and where staff are united by a shared belief in inclusion, dignity, and emotional understanding. ________________________________________ A setting that stays with you When we visited recently, what struck us most wasn’t just the high-spec facilities – though they are excellent – but the feeling. There’s a tangible sense of inclusivity in the corridors, a genuine warmth in the way staff speak about their pupils, and a strong sense of community and pride in the work being done. The headteacher and senior leadership team lead with a powerful combination of clarity, compassion and vision. Their leadership is grounded in wellbeing, inclusion and trust – not just for the pupils, but for every member of staff. The headteacher speaks passionately about emotional understanding, building staff confidence, and developing a team that feels valued, supported, and part of something truly meaningful. This is a school where relationships come first – where safety and connection are the foundation of every child’s experience. Why consider flexible work in this setting? This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are looking for flexible supply or cover roles within a truly values-driven environment. Whether you’re seeking regular part-time shifts, ad-hoc daily work, or experience before committing to a long-term role, this school offers you the chance to gain hands-on SEND experience while being supported by a passionate and nurturing team. You’ll join a bank of support staff who are called upon to cover absence, provide extra support on busy days, or step into short-term assignments across the school’s primary, secondary and post-16 pathways. ________________________________________ What does the day involve? No two days are the same, but you can expect to: • Support pupils with highly personalised, sensory-based learning • Assist with creative and therapeutic activities such as music, art, soft play, or hydrotherapy • Facilitate non-verbal communication using Makaton, PECS, or AAC • Help with personal care, feeding, and transitions throughout the school day • Collaborate with class teams and therapists to provide joined-up support • Bring joy and emotional safety to each child’s day – whether through laughter, calm presence, or gentle encouragement This is a school that takes a trauma-informed and Thrive-based approach, prioritising emotional safety, consistent routines, and building trusting relationships over behaviour control. There are no physical interventions used – regulation and connection are at the heart of everything they do. ________________________________________ Who would this role suit? This flexible support role is ideal for: • Nursery or Early Years Practitioners looking to apply their developmental and sensory experience in a school setting • Care or residential support workers seeking a transition into education • Students or graduates in Psychology, Education or Health and Social Care, looking to gain practical SEND experience • Career changers exploring work that offers fulfilment, community, and the chance to make a genuine difference No formal qualifications are required – just a calm, empathetic approach and a willingness to learn. Interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships are crucial! ________________________________________ Why register with Axcis Education? • Flexible work – choose when and how often you work • Supportive local consultant – I’m Laura, a former teacher with a SEND background, and I’ll be your main point of contact. • Competitive pay – starting from £13.89 per hour (PAYE) • FREE CPD and training, including Team Teach, Autism Awareness and Safeguarding • Opportunity to explore long-term roles or develop a career in SEND education • A chance to work in one of the most rewarding school environments in South Gloucestershire INDBRI
