SRG Recruitment are working with a growing business in Southampton seeking a reliable, practical and organised Fleet & Yard Supervisor to join our busy team in Southampton.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a busy environment and has a genuine interest in HGVs, vehicles and fleet operations. The role involves basic vehicle maintenance, routine checks and liaising with external workshops, with a 12-week temp-to-perm contract and standard Monday–Friday hours.

Qualifications

• Experience in a yard, transport, fleet or similar operational environment.
• Comfortable carrying out basic vehicle maintenance and checks.
• Good organisational and time-management skills.
• Confident communicating with drivers and workshops.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day running of the vehicle yard.
• Carry out regular visual inspections of HGVs, trailers and equipment.
• Identify and report vehicle defects and maintenance needs.
• Liaise with external garages for servicing and repairs.
• Maintain records of defects, repairs and maintenance.
• Support drivers with day-to-day vehicle issues.
• Ensure yard is clean, tidy and organised.
• Assist with MOTs, servicing and scheduled maintenance.
• Monitor vehicles off the road and chase outstanding repairs.
• Ensure vehicles are available and ready for work.

SRG Recruitment are working with a growing business in Southampton who are seeking a reliable, practical and organised Fleet & Yard Supervisor to join our busy team in Southampton.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a busy environment and has a genuine interest in HGVs, vehicles and fleet operations.

We are looking for someone with basic mechanical and vehicle maintenance experience who is confident carrying out routine checks, minor maintenance tasks and identifying defects. You will also be responsible for liaising with external workshops and garages when more substantial repairs or servicing are required.

About the role:

• Monday - Friday 11am - 8pm (Flexible)
• 40 hours a week contract
• 12 week temp to perm position

Key Responsibilities

• Overseeing the day-to-day running and organisation of the vehicle yard.
• Carrying out regular visual inspections of HGVs, trailers and equipment.
• Identifying and reporting vehicle defects and maintenance requirements.
• Carrying out basic maintenance and minor repairs where appropriate.
• Checking oil, coolant, tyres, lights and other basic vehicle components.
• Monitoring vehicle cleanliness and general condition.
• Liaising with external garages and workshops regarding servicing and repairs.
• Monitoring vehicles that are off the road and following up outstanding repairs.
• Helping to ensure vehicles are available and ready for work.
• Supporting drivers with day-to-day vehicle-related issues.
• Ensuring vehicle keys and yard movements are properly controlled.
• Assisting with MOTs, servicing and scheduled maintenance.
• Maintaining accurate records of defects, repairs and maintenance.
• Monitoring driver vehicle checks and ensuring defects are reported correctly.
• Ensuring the yard is kept clean, tidy and organised.
• Supporting the management team with fleet-related administration.
• Ensuring company health & safety procedures are followed.
• Reporting vehicle damage, accidents and other incidents to management.
• Assisting with subcontractor and vehicle movements when required.

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

• Practical and hands‑on, with a genuine interest in vehicles.
• Experienced in a yard, transport, fleet or similar operational environment.
• Confident carrying out basic vehicle maintenance and checks.
• Able to identify mechanical issues and understand when professional attention is required.
• Organised and able to prioritise competing tasks.
• Reliable, punctual and willing to take responsibility.
• Confident communicating with drivers, workshops and management.
• Health and safety conscious.
• Comfortable working outdoors.
• Able to work independently while also being part of a wider team.
• Computer literate and comfortable maintaining basic records.

Experience Required

Previous experience within transport, fleet, HGV, plant, waste/recycling or a similar environment would be highly beneficial.

You do not need to be a fully qualified mechanic. However, you should have a good practical understanding of vehicles and be comfortable carrying out basic maintenance, inspections and fault identification.

HGV experience would be particularly advantageous.

A relevant vehicle maintenance qualification would be an advantage but is not essential for the right candidate.
