Contract: Fixed term: 12 months (Maternity cover)

Hours: Full time - 10 sessions per week (10 PAs)

Job Overview

The Emergency Department at Southmead Hospital sees between 230 and 300 patients per day, with a wide variety of conditions predominantly from the North of Bristol but from the region as part of the Trust’s tertiary services. The department was opened in 2014 as part of the new Hospital and provides outstanding facilities.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful applicant will work with the established Consultants in a rota including evening, weekend, and overnight sessions as part of their job plan. The successful applicant will be expected to take a role in our Ambulatory observation unit, as well as working with the other Consultants on the shop floor, enabling the Department to meet National Service Frameworks and Government targets.

Management Structure

The appointee will be contractually accountable to the North Bristol NHS Trust for the provision of services. The appointee will be managerially responsible to the Chief Executive through the Divisional Director. All Consultants are required to undergo an annual appraisal carried out in accordance with the Trust policy. Consultants are also required to take an active and cooperative approach to their job planning, which will be reviewed on an annual basis by their clinical Director.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
  • Clinical Duties:
    • Diagnosis and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department Southmead Hospital.
    • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in liaison with Consultant colleagues.
  • Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students:
    • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
    • Teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as requested by the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education.
  • Study & Research:

The post holder will be entitled to 30 days study leave within a 3-year period (pro rata for part-time posts) as stated in the Terms and Conditions of Service.

The Trust is committed to ensuring that support is given for Continuing Medical Education.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • CCT in Emergency medicine or within 6 months of obtaining
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC
Training & Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of NHS experience
  • Minimum of 8 years post-graduate experience including completion of recognised ED specialist Registrar training Programme or equivalent
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of Emergency Medicine conditions.
  • Advanced resuscitation skills, experience of observation Medicine
Research, Teaching, Publications
  • Proven teaching ability
  • Willingness to undertake teaching of Medical undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Proven track record in research and willingness to undertake further research
Personal Requirements
  • Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships with a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
