Job summary

A leading technology firm in the UK is seeking a Firmware Engineering Team Lead to guide the design and development of firmware products for emergency and safety vehicle equipment, and electric vehicles. The role requires proven expertise in embedded C programming and leadership of engineering teams across multiple locations. Ideal candidates will have over 5 years of experience and a strong background in firmware design and development, ensuring technology launches meet project deadlines and budgets.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ practical engineering experience, including at least 3 years with embedded C programming.
  • Extensive knowledge of microcontroller and peripheral driver firmware design.

The Firmware Engineering Team Lead is primarily responsible for guiding the Firmware Engineering Team in designing, developing, and testing firmware products in alignment with departmental and business objectives. This position is an active contributor to the design, development, and testing of firmware products associated with emergency and safety vehicle equipment, as well as electric vehicles. The role also involves planning, executing, and evaluating managed projects to ensure delivery in accordance with agreed timelines and budgets.

Job Responsibilities
  • Oversee the strategic deployment of technology and systems architecture maintained by the Firmware Team.
  • Contribute directly to the conceptualisation, development, and testing of innovative new firmware products.
  • Oversee the operations and processes of the Firmware Team, maintaining all associated documentation and records.
  • Liaise with the Project Engineering Team regarding team member allocation to ensure progress and innovation across all projects.
  • Manage, develop, and evaluate the performance of the Firmware Team, driving continued training and professional development for team members.
  • Monitor the team’s key performance indicators and report on these metrics to the Director of Engineering and other business leaders.
  • Analyse current engineering processes and implement continuous improvement initiatives that align with business objectives.
  • Develop strong cross-functional relationships across the organisation; collaborate with other business units on new and existing technologies and projects.
  • Incorporate the Voice of the Customer into design requirements.
  • Ensure the necessary resources are available to deliver technology launches on time and within budget.
  • Communicate effectively, clearly articulating technical status and design progress within the business.
  • Engage with industry stakeholders, customers, and strategic partners to identify, define, and develop new technologies and market opportunities.
  • Provide technical support to both internal and external project stakeholders.
  • Uphold company policies and procedures for both self and team members, promoting a safe and collaborative working environment.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
  • BSc in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, or Software Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent firmware/embedded software-based technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ practical engineering experience, including at least 3 years’ experience with embedded C programming (expert proficiency). Automotive industry and/or leadership experience would be advantageous.
  • Extensive knowledge of microcontroller and peripheral driver firmware design.
  • Comprehensive understanding of firmware development tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in new product innovation and development.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage competing tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Proven analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to lead teams across multiple locations.
  • Willingness to travel in line with project requirements and to work flexible hours where necessary.
