Job summary

The University of Brighton is seeking a proactive Fire Safety Support Officer in the Health and Safety Department, based at Brighton (Moulsecoomb). This part-time role is 390 annualised hours with flexible scheduling across the year to suit operational needs.

You will coordinate fire drills, deliver training, develop PEEPs, assist with audits and record management, maintain equipment and provide guidance to staff, contributing to a strong fire safety culture across the campus.

Qualifications

  • Evidence of significant qualifications or training in fire safety matters.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body is preferable.

Salary: £35,608 to £39,906 pro rata

7.5 hours per week

We are seeking a proactive and capable Fire Safety Support Officer to join our Health and Safety team. This is a part‑time role based on 390 annualised hours. The working pattern is flexible, with hours scheduled across the year to meet operational requirements, while considering the availability of the successful candidate (e.g. days, weeks, or defined project periods).

This is a key role supporting the delivery of operational fire safety across the University. Working closely with the Fire Safety Adviser, Estates and Facilities, and other stakeholders, you will help ensure compliance, support the implementation of fire safety policies and procedures, and promote a positive fire safety culture.

About the role:
  • This role will coordinate fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures, deliver a range of fire safety training, support the development of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs).
  • This role will also assist with fire safety audits, inspections, and record management.
  • The role also includes maintaining fire safety equipment and providing advice and guidance to staff across the University.
About you:
  • You will be an effective communicator, able to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders, and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • You will have a good understanding of fire safety legislation and experience of supporting fire safety activities such as training, audits, or emergency planning within a complex organisation.
  • You will have evidence of significant qualifications or training in fire safety and emergency planning matters and membership of relevant professional body. Where candidates do not hold this qualification but can demonstrate supporting competencies relevant to this post, support will be given to attain the qualification as soon as possible.
