If so, there has never been a better time to join GMFRS Protection Department as a Fire Safety Inspector. Rated as ‘Good’ by HMICFRS, we want you to help us become Outstanding. Our Protection Teams work to ensure compliance with fire safety laws and offer advice and support to a wide range of commercial and residential premises. We have specialized teams including a Risk Reduction Team, Investigations and Enforcement Team, Technical and Consultations Team, and Higher Risk Team, focusing on high-rise buildings, hospitals, and other high-risk sites.
We are creating a new team to support the Greater Manchester Remediation Acceleration Plan, a unique opportunity to lead the way in tackling the building safety crisis. This involves working closely with residents, housing providers, and managing agents. We are keen to attract candidates with a background in housing management or advisory services.
Your core role as a Fire Safety Inspector will be to audit premises, provide advice, and take enforcement action where necessary. You will engage with businesses through presentations, events, and guidance. You will work with partners to ensure fire safety considerations are integrated into their work, respond to consultations, develop new working methods, and participate in multi-agency initiatives. As you develop, you may be involved in complex enforcement and investigations.
Our Protection Teams are based at various locations across Greater Manchester. You must be prepared to work throughout the region, have a valid driving license, and be able to provide a vehicle for work purposes.

If you have excellent communication skills, analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and can manage a busy workload, you are suitable. Experience working in teams, developing partnerships, and delivering service improvements is also important.
We provide essential training and ongoing professional development. Progression to Senior Fire Safety Inspector is possible with additional qualifications and competence demonstration.

Available roles: Several Fire Safety Inspector positions are available. Induction begins the week of 15th September 2025. You must be available to start then.
Roles in Investigations and Enforcement require out-of-hours work on a self-rostering shift system with a 10% enhancement. Shifts are between 2 pm and 10 pm, including late and weekend shifts.
Fire Safety Inspectors work from a base location at a Fire Station in Greater Manchester and inspect daily. Remote working is limited and by agreement.
