Job Description:

Fire Opportunities – Engineer up to Associate Director
Bristol, Glasgow, London or Manchester

About the role

We have exciting opportunities for Fire Engineers at all levels (Engineer to Associate Director) to join our Bristol, Glasgow, London, and Manchester offices.

Hoare Lea’s Fire Engineering Group is a leading team of experienced fire safety experts, many of whom are Chartered Engineers through the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Being part of one of the UK's largest building engineering consultancies, we benefit from collaborating with some of the best engineers in the business, with access to state-of-the-art technical support, and have the opportunity to work on some of the UK's largest and most high-profile projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The fire team also works independently on fantastic projects, with many in our team having developed long-term relationships with many great clients.

A particular area where we have invested heavily is training and research. We have numerous research groups within the team to ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of our discipline; this includes computational and numerical modelling, emerging fire risks, new techniques, and fire testing – notably, we recently led the design and implementation of two of the world’s largest cross-laminated timber (CLT) compartment fire tests in France, to validate our detailed calculations for a highly sustainable timber office building project.

In addition to Hoare Lea’s best-in-class training, the fire group has developed extensive additional training and development opportunities – weekly training sessions, regular training away-days, innovation days, and access to external training and conferences. We emphasize enabling our team to achieve Chartered Engineer status, with a dedicated program that has helped many fire engineers obtain their CEng over the years. This is supported by our very experienced and highly qualified team.

We are active in key organizations such as the Society for Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Smoke Control Association, BSI Group, and the Institution of Fire Engineers.

In this key and varied role, you can expect to:

  • Work with colleagues within Hoare Lea as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and also manage a significant portfolio of long-term external clients.
  • Attend design team meetings, design workshops, client meetings, and site visits.
  • Travel to clients or projects within the UK, and occasionally internationally, according to project needs.
  • Work with software analysis tools – evacuation, smoke and fire modelling, heat radiation models, and structural fire modelling.
  • Create design deliverables including specifications, drawings, and schedules.
  • Interact regularly with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring a communicative, collaborative, and timely approach to delivery.
  • Support invoicing, debt chasing, manage WIP, and plan workload/resources for your projects.
  • Mentor and support our 'next gen' professionals, including apprentices and graduates.

About you

  • Experience working within a fire engineering consultancy role.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Building Services, Maths, Architecture, or Physics, with a keen interest in Fire Engineering. You should have a solid technical knowledge in fire safety design.
  • IT literate with a good understanding of fire modelling software analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and an interest in team collaboration.
  • Ability and commitment to meet demanding deadlines with good organizational and planning skills.
  • Chartered engineer status is required for roles above Associate.
