To support our ambitious growth plans, we have a great opportunity to join our Building and Real Estate Division. SOCOTEC’s Fire Engineering and Safety Teams provide an award-winning, flexible and forward-thinking approach, as well as a high level of technical capability, providing our clients with cost-effective and practical solutions for the full range of fire safety problems.

In response to the expansion of our Fire Engineering Team, we are actively seeking a Fire Engineer. This role involves providing a high level of service to our customers across all fire engineering sectors liaising with clients, preparing fee proposals and managing projects from inception to completion.

Working across a variety of projects both autonomously and as part of a wider team, tasks you will be required to undertake as part of your role include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide continuous high quality fire engineering services to our customers, including but not limited to:
    • Develop fire safety strategies and associated mark-ups for various buildings and infrastructure projects
    • Provide advisory support and carry out site visits during construction stage
    • Prepare assessment reports of external wall systems
    • Prepare other technical engineering analysis such as CFD modelling, structural fire engineering, etc using programs such as FDS/PyroSim, Pathfinder, SAFIR, B-Risk, etc
    • Third party review/design verification
  • Have a clear understanding of fire safety issues and provide well supported fire engineered solutions through the selection of appropriate methods and tools
  • Have an understanding of relevant legislation and design guidance such as Approved Document B (ADB), BS 9999, BS 9991 and BS 7974
  • Prepare / review fee proposal letters
  • Manage projects from inception to completion and be responsible for the associated invoicing
  • Work reliably, professionally and effectively with others (internally and externally), manage time effectively (including regularly filling in timesheets) and operate within the limits of competency
  • Work within a team environment and be able to support staff in their work
  • Ensure SOCOTEC systems and policies are followed and assist with the development and continued improvement of the these (e.g. internal procedures, templates, or similar)
  • Ensure that records are maintained to determine that the company’s Quality Procedures, service levels and contractual requirements are being met
  • Maintain and manage strong client relationships and identify business development opportunities
  • Manage external collaborators working on SOCOTEC projects
  • Contribute to sustainable development and the evolution of the fire engineering discipline

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering (mechanical, structural, civil or similar field)
  • A postgraduate fire engineering qualification (certificate, diploma or masters)
  • Involvement and recognition with a professional body
  • At least two years’ experience in a similar role
  • To be extremely passionate about fire safety
  • Self-motivated, able to prioritise and work on own initiative, as well as following instructions and working as part of a team
  • Numerate, and organised with attention to detail
  • Professional appearance and behaviour
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet customer needs and changing priorities
  • Reliable, punctual, honest and trustworthy
