Job summary

Aberdeen Football Club is seeking a Finance Director to lead the financial strategy and shape the club’s development. This role focuses on forward planning, business partnering, and modernisation, reporting to the Chief Executive, Board and ownership group.

You will oversee budgeting, cashflow, forecasting and reporting, while guiding football-related investments and commercial decisions. A strong governance mindset, adaptability and a track record of improving systems are essential.

Job description

Aberdeen Football Club is looking for a Finance Director to lead its financial strategy and help shape the next phase of the club’s development.

This is not a traditional back-office finance role. The role focusses on stronger forward planning, business partnering and modernisation. You will lead the core finance function while acting as a trusted partner to the Chief Executive, the Board and the ownership group.

You will oversee budgeting, cashflow, forecasting, management information, controls and football finance. You will work closely with the sporting leadership on squad planning and player investment, challenge commercial and operational proposals, and help leaders understand the financial implications of major decisions before they are made.

Aberdeen also wants the role to look forward. The ownership group is entrepreneurial and interested in how technology, automation and AI can improve the way the club works. You do not need to be a technology specialist, but you will bring curiosity, sound judgement and evidence of improving systems, processes or reporting.

Professional football or team-sport experience would be a significant advantage. The club will also consider selected senior finance leaders from adjacent sectors such as venues, events, leisure and entertainment where the operating model, seasonality and stakeholder complexity transfer well.

You will need strong technical finance foundations, Board-level credibility and the emotional intelligence to operate around strong personalities and changing priorities. The best fit will be comfortable moving from detailed financial control to strategic discussion, and confident enough to challenge while keeping relationships constructive.

The role is based in Aberdeen. The club operates a flexible working policy and will consider individual arrangements for the right person, with strong on-site visibility expected during onboarding and at key points in the football calendar.
