Job summary

Burendo is seeking a Financial Controller to own the month-end close, controls, and treasury functions, while leading the FinOps team and overseeing HR administration. As Financial Controller, you’ll be the custodian of financial integrity across the business. You’ll own everything from month-end close to statutory compliance, and lead the team that makes it all happen.

This is a genuine leadership role at the heart of the business. You’ll take full ownership of financial controls, cash and treasury management, governance, and statutory reporting, while leading the FinOps team day-to-day and overseeing HR administration. As the primary operational finance decision-maker and first point of escalation below the CFO, you’ll act as deputy CFO: the main point of contact for auditors, banking partners, and external suppliers.

Financial Control & Reporting

• Own the month-end close process end-to-end, delivering accurate financial statements by Day +5
• Review and sign off all balance sheet reconciliations, escalating material risks to the CFO
• Prepare management accounts (Balance Sheet and Cash Flow), supporting the CFO with Board packs
• Design and continuously improve the internal control environment
• Lead the audit process, managing the timetable and owning key accounting judgements
• Own the application of UK GAAP / FRS102 across the finance function, acting as first point of technical guidance for the team
• Oversee VAT, PAYE and payroll governance in line with the delegation of authority framework

Treasury & Cash Management

• Own the short-term cash flow forecast, monitoring daily liquidity and flagging funding risks
• Manage day-to-day banking relationships, facilities and working capital
• Oversee accounts payable and credit control, targeting a 35-day DSO
• Own the Balance Sheet and Cash Flow elements of the quarterly forecast and annual budget

Governance & Compliance

• Draft and maintain finance procedures and SOPs for CFO approval
• Support the CFO on governance reporting and statutory compliance
• Ensure all regulatory filings (VAT, PAYE, Companies House) are accurate and on time

Systems & Technology

• Own the accounting and ledger systems (Xero, Bankline), maintaining data integrity and controls
• Drive automation and process improvement across the finance stack

Team Leadership & HR Oversight

• Lead and develop the FinOps team, managing workload, quality and progression
• Oversee HR administration (records, onboarding, payroll inputs, benefits) and act as escalation point for HR matters

About You

Essential

• Qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA or ACA)
• Proven track record as a Financial Controller or senior finance leader, with full ownership of month-end, controls and treasury
• Strong grasp of financial controls, audit and statutory reporting
• Hands-on experience with Xero or equivalent systems
• Confident, credible leader able to challenge senior stakeholders
• Advanced Excel skills; experience with reporting/BI tools
• Highly organised, thriving under pressure and tight deadlines

Desirable

• Experience in consultancy, professional services or a project-based environment

• Exposure to banking relationships or treasury management

• Track record improving finance systems and automation

• Experience leading a small team, including non-finance functions
