Job summary

Word360, based in Birmingham, is seeking a hands-on Financial Controller to report to the CFO. You will lead an 8-person finance team, identify control weaknesses, and design solutions to mitigate risks while producing monthly management accounts and a narrative for board reporting.

You will also partner with business units to drive efficiencies, manage month-end close, budgets, forecasts, and treasury support. Strong ACA/ACCA/CIMA and advanced Excel are essential.

Qualifications

  • ACCA/ACA/CIMA qualified.
  • Strong financial accounting background.
  • Advanced Excel and modelling skills.
  • Experience in private industry preferred.
  • Experience in developing and managing teams.
  • Proficiency with financial software (AccountsIQ).

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day finance team (8 people) with oversight, process improvements and support.
  • Identify development areas and help shape the future structure of the team.
  • Manage month-end processes including journals (accruals, prepayments, deferred income, payroll journals, sales & purchases).
  • Produce Board Pack with monthly P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and narrative.
  • Produce monthly departmental spend analysis and challenge improvements.
  • Support treasury management and audit relationships.
  • Main contact with other departments and tender pricing discussions.
  • Identify areas of control weakness and provide system improvement initiatives.

About The Role

We are recruiting for a hands‑on, people‑focused, Financial Controller, that will report into the CFO. The individual will oversee the management of the existing finance team and will play a crucial role in identifying control weaknesses and designing solutions to mitigate risks. The individual will be actively involved in producing the monthly management accounts, providing analysis to support strategic decision making and leading on business partnering to drive company‑wide efficiencies.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Managing the day‑to‑day operational finance team (8 people) - providing oversight, process improvement and support. Typical tasks undertaken by the team include: high‑volume booking approvals, creating & reviewing client invoices, credit control, supplier payment runs, framework reporting and ad‑hoc information queries.
  • Identify team development areas and support with the shaping of the future structure of the team.
  • Managing the month end management accounts process, including being responsible for calculating and posting manual journals encompassing accruals, prepayments, deferred income, accrued income, payroll journals and sales & purchase reserving.
  • Producing a Board Pack containing monthly profit and loss account, balance sheet, cash flow and supporting narrative.
  • Producing monthly departmental spend analysis compared to budget and challenge on areas for improvement.
  • Undertaking month end checks and reconciliations on the management account figures and investigating discrepancies.
  • Preparing budgets, forecasts and re‑forecasts for management review.
  • Supporting with Treasury management.
  • Supporting with Tender pricing and commercial strategies for new products and services.
  • Being the key point of contact and managing the statutory financial audit relationship.
  • Being the main point of contact with other departments.
  • Identify areas of control weakness and provide system improvement initiatives.
Skills and Attributes Required
  • ACCA / ACA / CIMA qualified
  • Strong Financial Accounting background
  • Advanced Excel skills and Financial modelling capability.
  • Commercially focussed with the ability to improve processes.
  • Experience of working in private industry preferred.
  • Experience in developing and managing teams.
  • Approachable, adaptable and agile.
  • Proficiency in financial software (we use Accounts IQ).
  • An eye for detail and a willingness to undertake all types of financial tasks.
  • Ability to make informed, data driven decisions.
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
