Job summary

tmGroup in Swindon is seeking a Financial Accountant to join the Finance team in a hybrid setting (3 days in the office, 2 days remote). The role is ideal for someone with an audit or practice background transitioning to a commercial in-house environment.

The successful candidate will work on group reporting, statutory accounts, and investigate billing engine issues, reporting to the Group Financial Controller. ACCA/ACA qualification progress supported with exam leave.

Qualifications

• Part-qualified ACCA/ACA (or equivalent), with an audit or practice background particularly welcome.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge of UK GAAP (FRS 102); IFRS knowledge is an advantage.
• Experience supporting or coordinating an external audit, either in practice or in-house.
• Good understanding of financial controls, reconciliations and accounting processes.
• Curious and investigative approach, with the confidence to ask questions and get to the root of an issue.
• Able to apply technical knowledge in a practical way, considering the wider business rather than simply applying a rule.
• Clear and confident communicator who raises issues with non-finance colleagues.
• Comfortable in a fast-paced PE-backed environment and able to adapt to change.

Responsibilities

• Support the Group Financial Controller with the external audit, acting as a key contact for auditors.
• Prepare supporting audit files for annual statutory accounts, including disclosures and intercompany accounting under UK GAAP (FRS 102) and IFRS where appropriate.
• Support Group reporting, including intercompany reconciliations and consolidation file.
• Assess new or unusual transactions and judgemental areas such as revenue recognition, accruals, deferred income and provisions.
• Keep up to date with accounting standards and identify potential impacts on the business.
• Help strengthen financial controls and processes, identifying weaknesses and driving improvements.
• Collaborate with Finance, Search Production and Tech teams to investigate discrepancies in the billing engine.
• Support VAT, statutory and external reporting and finance system changes with Systems Accountant.

We're looking for a Financial Accountant to join our Finance team at an exciting point in its development. The team has made real strides in improving processes and confidence in the numbers, with plenty more to build – and this role will be right at the centre of that.

This is a part-qualified position, ideally suited to someone with an audit or practice background looking to move into a commercial, in-house environment. We're looking for someone who can combine strong technical accounting knowledge with a practical, flexible approach – someone who can look beyond the rules and the numbers, ask the right questions and work through less straightforward issues.

You'll get exposure to Group reporting, the year-end audit process and investigative work into our billing engine, with genuine scope to explore, question and add value. You'll report directly to our Group Financial Controller and, as your experience develops, have the opportunity to get involved in statutory accounts preparation and wider commercial projects.

If you're working towards ACCA or ACA, we'll provide full study support, including exam leave.

What you’ll do

• Support the Group Financial Controller with the external audit, acting as a key point of contact for auditors and managing queries through to resolution.
• Prepare supporting audit files for the annual statutory accounts, including disclosures and intercompany accounting, with clear, well-evidenced technical accounting advice under UK GAAP (FRS 102) and, where appropriate, IFRS.
• Support Group reporting, including intercompany reconciliations and the consolidation file, while building your wider commercial understanding.
• Assess new or unusual transactions and judgemental areas such as revenue recognition, accruals, deferred income and provisions – applying technical knowledge alongside sound judgement and commercial thinking.
• Keep up to date with accounting standards and identify any changes that could impact the business.
• Help strengthen our financial controls and processes, identifying weaknesses and inefficiencies and supporting improvements.
• Work with Finance, Search Production and Tech teams to investigate discrepancies and understand what's happening behind the numbers, including within our billing engine.
• Support the Group Financial Controller with VAT, statutory and external reporting, as well as finance system changes alongside the Systems Accountant.

About you

We're looking for someone with a strong accounting foundation who is also curious, adaptable and comfortable thinking beyond the numbers.

• Part-qualified ACCA/ACA (or equivalent), with an audit or practice background particularly welcome.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge of UK GAAP (FRS 102); working knowledge of IFRS is an advantage.
• Experience supporting or coordinating an external audit, either in practice or in-house.
• Good understanding of financial controls, reconciliations and accounting processes.
• A naturally curious and investigative approach, with the confidence to ask questions and get to the root of an issue.
• Able to apply technical knowledge in a practical way, considering the wider business rather than simply applying a rule or following a process.
• A clear and confident communicator who is comfortable raising issues, challenging assumptions and working with people outside Finance.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, PE-backed environment and able to adapt your approach when circumstances change.

Desirable

• Familiarity with Microsoft Business Central and/or Cognos.
• An interest in developing your commercial experience, with the opportunity to become involved in statutory accounts and wider cross-business projects.
