Salary: up to £52,000 + excellent benefits

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time

I am proud to be partnered with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue to recruit a Financial Accountant to take ownership of the Authority's technical accounting and closedown process. This role is a key part of a small, professional finance team, and I am looking for someone with the skills and confidence to hit the ground running - particularly on year-end accounts, compliance, and audit preparation.

You'll be stepping into a position where my client needs a detail-oriented, regulation-driven accountant who is comfortable working independently and handling complex technical accounting requirements. It's the ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys applying standards, producing accounts, and leading on audit readiness.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the preparation of the Statement of Accounts (including group accounts and pensions), ensuring full compliance with CIPFA, IFRS and IAS standards
  • Produce robust working papers and act as the main point of contact during external audit
  • Handle complex transactions including LLP joint venture consolidation and technical pensions accounting (IAS19)
  • Monitor and support monthly financial reporting (no formal month-end), while preparing for full year-end close
  • Contribute to budget modelling and financial forecasting linked to the Medium-Term Financial Strategy
  • Support internal controls and ensure changes in regulations are correctly applied to systems and processes

What we're looking for:

  • A technically strong accountant, comfortable working independently and focused on accuracy, compliance and deadlines
  • Proven experience in year-end accounts production, audit liaison and applying accounting standards
  • Confident in handling complex financial data, preparing working papers and resolving accounting issues
  • Strong knowledge of CIPFA Code (or IFRS for private sector candidates with a willingness to learn public sector)
  • Highly proficient in Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs and financial modelling
  • Experience with financial systems (Unit4/Agresso, but adaptable system users are welcome)
  • Able to work with detail and complexity - someone who is comfortable sitting down and getting on with technical work

Qualifications:

  • Essential to be part-qualified (support available if working toward full qualification)

All Applicants must have full unrestricted UK work rights.

This is a hybrid, full time role, requiring 3 days onsite from Ripley, Derbyshire.

Please note; all applicants will be asked to complete a short cover letter to go alongside their CV, ahead of shortlisting Tuesday 26th August.
