Job summary

Gateshead Council is seeking a Finance Officer to join the Exchequer team. You will support delivery of financial services, maintain records, and provide accurate financial information to support essential council services.

The role requires problem-solving, staff supervision, collaboration across services, and a commitment to continuous improvement in financial processes. Hybrid working and a strong benefits package accompany the position.

Qualifications

• 4 GCSE passes at Grade 4/C or above (including Maths and English).
• Experience in a finance environment with knowledge of financial processes, controls and systems.
• Strong leadership and supervisory skills with experience supporting, motivating and managing team performance.
• Confidence using financial systems and Microsoft Office applications to analyse information and maintain records.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills enabling you to handle complex queries.
• Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and maintain accuracy in a busy environment.
• Strong organisational and problem-solving skills with a drive to improve processes.
• Collaborative approach and ability to work across services and teams.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Senior Finance Officer in managing allocated Exchequer services.
• Help ensure efficient delivery of financial support in line with policies and regulations.
• Support the operation and review of financial systems and procedures.
• Supervise Exchequer staff and contribute to development.
• Monitor IT systems and keep computerized records accurate.
• Provide financial and statistical information as required.
• Undertake projects within Financial Management as needed.
• Handle complex queries from suppliers and customers.
• Assist with creditor payments, debtors and other Exchequer duties.

What you’ll do (Essential Criteria)

• Assist the Senior Finance Officer in the management of allocated services within Exchequer.
• Assist with ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of financial support services to groups in line with council policies, procedures and financial regulations.
• Assist with the effective and efficient operation of the councils financial systems and support the continuous review of systems and procedures.
• Supervise employees within Exchequer as allocated and support staff development.
• Monitor and maintain IT systems and computerized records ensuring information is accurate and up to date.
• Provision of financial and statistical information as required.
• Undertake projects within Financial Management as required.
• Deal with complex queries from suppliers and customers.
• Assist with the authorisation procedures of creditor payments, debtors and other Exchequer functions.

What you’ll bring:

• 4 GCSE passes at Grade 4 or Grade C or above (or equivalent, including Maths and English)
• Experience working in a finance environment, with a good understanding of financial processes, controls, and systems.
• Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with experience supporting, motivating, and managing team performance.
