Why this role matters

This role is essential in maintaining a strong control environment with processes to prevent errors and ensure an audit trail for accurate financial data.

The role also involves identifying emerging and ongoing risks to our control environment and financial position, enabling quick and effective responses. Openreach’s Statutory Finance team develops and maintains controls in line with group guidance, reports on finance-related risks, and assists with external audits throughout the year.

What you'll be doing
  • Facilitating the external audit process, including walkthroughs, monitoring audit deliverables, and resolving queries from auditors.
  • Developing financial controls, ensuring compliance with evidencing, reporting, and assurance requirements, and addressing deficiencies.
  • Providing quarterly updates to senior management, including BT Group CFO and Openreach CFO, on financial controls and projects.
  • Assisting with VAT checklists for new revenue codes and acting as the main VAT query contact.
  • Updating ARTEMIS (BT risk management system) and collaborating with risk leads for quarterly meetings.
  • Leading the preparation of Openreach Limited financial statements and internal audits.
  • Delivering the annual asset verification and life review accounting papers.
  • Supporting the central finance team with ad-hoc tasks and updating accounting papers.
The skills you'll need
  • Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent).
  • Experience with the external audit process, either as an auditor or being audited.
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence in discussions beyond your subject area.
  • Pragmatic team player with the ability to hold others accountable and deliver commitments.
  • Understanding or willingness to learn about maintaining a strong control environment and audit trail.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deliver key financial outcomes.
