Job summary

Linear Recruitment Ltd. is seeking a Finance Manager in Durham to oversee day-to-day financial operations within a construction-focused contractor. The role covers payroll, supplier payments, ledgers, and financial reporting while ensuring compliance and timely month-end processes.

The ideal candidate will have strong payroll, VAT, CIS knowledge, and experience using Sage/Xero/QuickBooks, plus excellent Excel skills and solid organisational ability.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as Finance Manager or senior finance roles in construction.
• Experience with payroll, CIS, VAT and supplier payments.
• Proficient with Sage, Xero, QuickBooks or similar accounting packages.
• Excellent Excel skills and attention to detail.
• AAT qualification or ACCA/CIMA partial desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Manage weekly and monthly payroll for employees and subcontractors.
• Process and authorise supplier invoices and payments.
• Maintain purchase and sales ledgers.
• Reconcile bank accounts and company credit cards.
• Monitor cash flow and prepare regular financial reports.
• Manage CIS deductions and submissions where applicable.
• Prepare VAT returns and assist with year-end accounts.
• Liaise with external accountants and auditors.
• Ensure HMRC compliance and financial regulations.
• Oversee credit control and manage customer payments.

About The Company

Our client are a well-established construction contractor delivering high-quality projects across the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced and highly organised Finance Manager to oversee our day‑to‑day financial operations and support the continued success of the business.

The Role

As Finance Manager, you will be responsible for managing the company's financial administration, ensuring accurate payroll processing, maintaining supplier payments, and supporting the financial health of the business. This is a hands‑on role requiring excellent attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and experience within the construction industry.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage weekly and monthly payroll, ensuring employees and subcontractors are paid accurately and on time.
• Process and authorise supplier invoices and payments.
• Maintain purchase and sales ledgers.
• Reconcile bank accounts and company credit cards.
• Monitor cash flow and prepare regular financial reports.
• Manage CIS deductions and submissions where applicable.
• Prepare VAT returns and assist with year‑end accounts.
• Work closely with external accountants and auditors.
• Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations and financial legislation.
• Oversee credit control and manage customer payment collections.
• Produce management accounts and provide financial insights to senior management.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
• Maintain accurate financial records using accounting software.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Finance Manager, Finance Officer, or Senior Bookkeeper.
• Previous experience within the construction industry is highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, VAT, and CIS.
• Experience using accounting software such as Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, or similar.
• Excellent understanding of Microsoft Excel.
• Strong organisational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• AAT qualified, part-qualified ACCA/CIMA, or equivalent is desirable but not essential.
