Job description

Time Commitment:Three committee meetings per year, alternating between online and in-person in London

The RCN is the largest professional association and union of nursing staff and students in the UK. We promote nursing interests, represent and campaign on behalf of our members and the people they care for. We're also a leading player in the development of nursing policy and practice.

External Advisers provide independent and objective specialist knowledge and skills to help shape and inform the work of the RCN Committees.The purpose of the Finance & Investment Committee is to provide objective scrutiny of the Group’s financial performance and investment function to ensure that resources are being used effectively, and that value for money and cost improvement is achieved across the Group.

Responsibilities of the Committee include:

  • Overseeing the five-year strategic plan, annual priorities as agreed by the Council, and performance measurement.
  • Managing financial planning, budgeting, and tax compliance.
  • Monitoring pension scheme performance and risk management.
  • Guiding investment strategy and treasury management.
  • Developing and delivering a strategy for commercial activities as part of the RCN’s overall strategy.

We are looking for someone with a strong finance background and significant experience in assessing financial positions, interpreting financial statements and accounts and steering financial performance.Strong candidates will bring:

  • Sound knowledge, understanding and experience of strategic planning, financial monitoring and compliance.
  • Experience in developing and managing investment strategies and monitoring investment portfolios (desirable).
  • Experience in monitoring and reviewing pension schemes (desirable).
