Job description

Finance Director (Pathology Partnership)

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a tight-knit director team which runs one of the NHS’ largest pathology networks. We carry out over 100,000 tests a day for over three million patients.

As Finance Director, you will be responsible for delivering all aspects of the Pathology Partnership’s financial and business management.

You will also be deeply involved in broader strategic and day-to-day decision making for the organisation to ensure that we stay true to our vision: to always deliver consistently reliable and timely pathology tests for every one of our patients.

We need a finance director who has financial acumen as well as technical skills and is able to communicate persuasively across the entire organisation and to our three owner trusts. The Partnership is co-owned by Barts Health, Homerton Healthcare, and Lewisham and Greenwich Trusts.

You will be a member of the Pathology Partnership’s Board, alongside four other directors, six executive directors from our three owner trusts, and an independent Chair.

The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health, providing you with the support of one of the NHS’ largest hospital groups.

Interview date: 21st August 2025

You will lead a team of accountants and other specialists to support financial activity, business intelligence, contract support, and procurement performance, maintaining team cohesion across the Pathology Partnership.

As a key member of the director team, you will provide leadership and strategic direction, demonstrating expert accounting and business knowledge, and presenting complex financial information clearly to clinical and non-clinical colleagues.

You will ensure the timely and accurate delivery of monthly performance reports to the Board, uphold procedures and controls, and challenge financial and business performance constructively. You will also support CIP delivery programmes and contribute to the organisation’s strategic planning.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership provides services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. It was formed in May 2021 and has undergone a complex transformation to establish a unified network of laboratories with integrated systems.

The Partnership operates a main hub at Royal London Hospital and six other hospital sites. Its three divisions include Blood Sciences, Microbiology and Virology, and Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics.

For 2024/25, the Partnership’s operating costs are approximately £121 million annually, with a workforce of around 860 WTE.

We are committed to our WeCare values and promoting an inclusive environment where every staff member feels a sense of belonging. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates, as they are underrepresented in this role.
