Finance Director (County Down/Construction)
VANRATH are delighted to be working with a thriving and dynamic business located in County Down to recruit an operationally strong Finance Director. Reporting directly to the Managing Director the Finance Director will play a central role in driving strategy, growth, and financial leadership. The successful candidate will work alongside a high-performing executive team, guide business-critical decisions, and influence the company's long-term trajectory.
The Finance Director will be responsible for ensuring tight cost control, accurate reporting, and robust governance across both businesses, while also working closely with the Commercial and Preconstruction teams on tenders and project delivery. This role demands a hands-on and strategic leader, capable of driving growth and maintaining high standards of financial discipline within the construction and plant hire industries.

The Role
- Key Responsibilities:
- Responsibility for the accounts and administration functions across both companies.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes to ensure tight working capital control.
- Prepare annual budgets, including departmental budgets, flexed forecasts, and cash flow projections.
- Prepare and present monthly management accounts, highlighting risks, variances, and opportunities.
- Prepare statutory accounts, liaise with auditors as required, and agree final accounts.
- Manage statutory returns to HMRC and Irish Revenue, including VAT, RCT, Intrastat, and other required submissions.
- Oversee and manage all payroll and compliance activities, including weekly/monthly wages, pensions, and statutory deductions, P11D submission.
- Monitor ongoing jobs to ensure they remain within budget and deliver expected margins.
- Control cash flow to ensure liquidity and funding efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with all statutory, tax, audit, and regulatory requirements across both UK and Ireland.
- Maintain strong internal financial controls and governance.
- Oversee tax planning and submissions, ensuring efficiency and compliance in both jurisdictions.
Qualifications
- 5 years post qualified accountant.
- Proven experience at Finance Director or senior finance leadership level.
- Strong background in construction, plant hire, or related industries.
- Demonstrated experience in budget setting, forecasting, management accounts, and statutory accounts.
- Hands-on experience managing payroll, pensions, and statutory returns.
- Knowledge of UK and Ireland tax jurisdictions, including VAT, RCT, and cross-border compliance.
- Familiarity with insurance, procurement, and administration management.
- Excellent commercial acumen, strong analytical and presentation skills.
- Strong leadership qualities, with a history of building and developing high-performing teams.
