Purpose of the role

Provide dedicated finance expertise, insight, and business partnering to NERC Governance Assurance Management and Non-Core R&D. The role supports NERC’s initiatives for financial sustainability of research centres and strategic partners, working closely with stakeholders to enhance financial decision-making aligned with Council and UKRI priorities.

Job Summary

As a Finance Business Partner, you will collaborate with various teams to manage budgets, provide financial insights, and support strategic objectives, ensuring compliance and fostering effective stakeholder relationships.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and partners, providing advice and input.
• Support Programme Managers and Senior Leaders with financial information, advice, and challenge.
• Collaborate across UKRI to identify improvements and promote a culture of teamwork.
• Act as deputy for the Senior Finance Business Partner when needed.

Delivery and Projects

• Perform reporting and control functions, linking budgets to delivery plans.
• Communicate the importance of finance to partners and support decision-making.
• Manage budget setting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
• Develop business cases and manage applications for additional funding.
• Ensure compliance with financial controls and policies.

Leadership

• Participate in UKRI Centres of Excellence and manage internal audit recommendations.
• Lead finance induction and continuous improvement workshops.

Budget Management

• Ensure stakeholders adhere to accounting rules and controls.
• Provide financial oversight for budgets, including the Green Future Strategic Theme and NERC’s NetZero initiatives.

Reporting

• Train stakeholders on financial systems and data interpretation.
• Produce monthly financial reports for executive review.

Person Specification

Qualifications: Qualified Accountant (ACA/CIMA/ACCA/CIPFA) or equivalent experience.

Experience & Knowledge: Strong financial management background, IT skills, financial modelling, and experience in budgeting and stakeholder engagement.

Skills & Abilities: Relationship building, influencing, leadership, communication, resilience, organization, and problem-solving skills.
