Overview

Field Service Engineer – Felixstowe

Salary: £46,125 per annum (£41,000 starting salary + 12.5% shift allowance). Paid door to door + overtime at 1.5x. 37.5 hour week, Monday to Friday.

On‑call system covering 1 week in 10 for nights and 1 week in 10 for days (incl. weekend). Occasional voluntary weekend work also paid at 1.5x. Overnight stays may be required where work cannot be completed in a set time.

This role would be ideal for an experienced technician with a track record of dealing with diesel engine technology/equipment, based close to Felixstowe. Electro-Motive Diesel is looking for a Field Service Engineer to join our team to maintain customer locomotive fleets and ensure safe and reliable operation through proactive and reactive, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance at various locations (railway sidings, depots and customer sites).

You will take a proactive approach to identifying and reporting potential issues and defects that could lead to loco failure or reliability problems. This is predominantly a lone working role; you will work autonomously using tools and procedures available to you, supported by a friendly and dedicated team and approachable managers who invest in individual development through continuous training.

Responsibilities
  • Carrying out scheduled maintenance, repair, overhaul, modification and fault‑finding activities.
  • Responding to the customer e20 99s unscheduled events in a rapid and efficient manner, delivering high standards of engineering workmanship with detailed reports and documentation.
  • Completing modifications and special checks within the scheduled maintenance.
  • Building productive working relationships with company staff, peers and customers.
  • Ensuring all work is documented correctly through our maintenance management system.

You will be required to partake in a 24/7 on‑call roster to provide out‑of‑hours support to the customer, covering 1 week in 10 for days and 1 week in 10 for nights.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship or equivalent experience
  • Driving licence
  • Prior experience maintaining diesel electric locomotives

Competencies / Experience
  • Proven record of working effectively with Diesel engineering technology, associated systems and controls.
  • Ability to engage with customers, understand needs and deliver proactive service.
  • Self‑start, proactive service delivery.
  • Strong communication skills; able to foster relationships at all levels with customers and peers.
  • Assertive decision‑making while remaining non‑confrontational in conflicts.
  • Logical, analytical, and objective problem solving and fault diagnosis.
  • Detail oriented with disciplined task completion.
  • Safety‑first mindset and understanding of UK rail safety culture and maintenance impact on safety.
  • Reasonable IT skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Flexible attitude to working hours, including out‑of‑hours work.
