Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity here at Smiths Detection for a Field Scientist to join our Technology Projects team on a 12-month fixed-term contract basis. Working from our Hemel Hempstead R&D site, this role will include regular visits to third-party laboratories. It offers a fantastic chance to be part of an expanding team, providing scientific expertise and support in areas such as technology and product development for chemical, explosives, and narcotics detection products. You will be instrumental in planning and executing experiments, analyzing data, and designing instruments and experiments.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Support scientific aspects of R&D and product development, including campaigns at third-party facilities.
  2. Provide scientific input to the design, build, and testing of experimental equipment.
  3. Plan and conduct original research to improve design and performance.
  4. Critically appraise experimental data and theory, providing guidance based on data interpretation.
  5. Identify research gaps and propose additional work.
  6. Contribute to project planning and review activities.
  7. Support the scientific aspects of products throughout their lifecycle.
  8. Manage own time with high autonomy; may lead technicians' work.
  9. Support off-site trials and tests.
  10. Work according to company policies and procedures.
  11. Provide technical advice to authorities, managers, and during bid preparations.

The Individual

  • PhD in Chemistry or Physics highly desirable; hands-on laboratory experience essential.
  • Knowledge of analytical instrument design and operation; Ion mobility spectrometry is a plus.
  • Strong experimental and data analysis skills.
  • Innovative thinker proposing original research ideas.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction at all levels.
  • Motivated, self-starting, capable of driving projects independently.
  • Ability to handle projects of reasonable scope successfully.
  • Problem-solving skills with technical solutions of moderate complexity.
  • Ability to work independently, make recommendations, and escalate when necessary.
  • Well-organized, adaptable, and effective in prioritizing tasks.
  • Contributes to assessing project feasibility and developing solutions.
