Job Description

Principal FPGA Engineer | £75–90k | Gloucester | Hybrid (1–2 days/week onsite)

My client is a leading defence and aerospace company developing mission-critical systems for land, sea, air, and space applications. Following continued project wins and long-term strategic investment, they are growing their FPGA design team.

Main duties:

  • Lead the development of high-reliability FPGA solutions for advanced embedded systems
  • Own the FPGA architecture across multiple platforms, from concept through to verification and integration
  • Collaborate closely with systems, software, and hardware teams to deliver end-to-end solutions
  • Drive technical reviews, mentor junior engineers, and play a key role in design authority decisions

Skills and Experience Required:

  • 8–15+ years of FPGA development experience using VHDL or Verilog
  • Hands-on experience with Xilinx or Intel (Altera) FPGAs and associated toolchains (Vivado, Quartus, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of digital design, timing analysis, and simulation
  • Experience working in highly regulated industries (e.g. aerospace, defence, or automotive)
  • Familiarity with version control, testbenches, and scripting (e.g. Python, Tcl)

Bonus:

  • Experience with DO-254 or similar safety-critical design standards
  • Embedded software or SoC integration knowledge
  • Understanding of DSP, high-speed interfaces, or signal processing applications
