Job description

About Avian Ecology

Avian Ecology Ltd is a specialist environmental consultancy based in Lower Stretton, Cheshire. We provide comprehensive ecological services to the renewable energy, infrastructure, and residential sectors across the UK. Our team is committed to delivering professional excellence, pragmatic advice, and robust documentation, ensuring that development and conservation can coexist harmoniously. We pride ourselves on our strong client relationships, our conservation credibility and our ability to integrate ecological solutions into complex projects.

Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Field Ornithologist to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will have a deep passion for bird conservation and possess outstanding UK bird identification skills (visual and sound). Knowledge of recognised bird survey methods is desirable but not essential, as is a wider understanding and interest in British wildlife. This role involves conducting field surveys across various habitats and landscapes, often in remote or challenging conditions, to support ecological assessments for development projects. The role will suit an active and passionate birder.

Key Responsibilities
• Conduct field-based ornithological surveys, including breeding bird surveys, wintering bird surveys, Vantage Point watches and migration monitoring.
• Identify and methodically record bird species in the field, including challenging species groups.
• Manage survey data efficiently, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
• Assist in preparing high-quality, clear, and concise survey results reports.
• Collaborate with project managers, ecologists, and clients to provide ornithological expertise.
• Assist with other survey types, e.g., protected mammals.
• Maintain equipment and resources necessary for fieldwork.
• Ensure compliance with relevant wildlife legislation and best practice guidelines.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
• Extensive experience in UK field ornithology, with a strong emphasis on bird identification.
• Experience in data management and entry, with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in varying field conditions.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Full UK driving license and willingness to travel extensively across England and Wales.
• Willingness to work unsociable hours at critical times, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends on occasion.

Desirable Skills
• Knowledge of standard bird field survey methods.
• Experience with GIS software and spatial data analysis.
• Knowledge of other British species, in particular good botanical knowledge.
• Familiarity with protected species legislation and mitigation strategies.
• Experience in report writing.

Benefits
• Competitive salary and benefits package.
• Opportunities for professional development and training.
• Supportive and collaborative work environment.
• Flexible working arrangements, with fieldwork and office-based tasks.
• Exposure to a diverse range of projects across various sectors.

Avian Ecology Ltd is an equal opportunities employer and values diversity in its workforce. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals.
