Job description

We are seeking a Fibre Splicer Technician to support the in-house fabrication of precision fibre assemblies used in our medical products. Working under supervision, the technician will be responsible for inspection, test and preparation of all components used, and the production of the complete assemblies. This will require the handling and preparation of fibre, bonding, polishing and fusion splicing. Being a highly regulated environment inspection and test of the completed assemblies and the ability to maintain accurate records are essential. This is an entry-level position suited to someone with strong manual dexterity and an interest in precision optical work.

This role will support both in house production and R&D activities and will therefore afford the opportunity to be involved in the design and development of cutting-edge optical techniques.

Key responsibilities
  • Prepare optical fibres for termination, including stripping, cleaving, and cleaning prior to bonding and polishing.
  • Prepare optical sub-assemblies for splicing, including cutting the fibre to the correct length, stripping, cleaving, and cleaning to the required standard.
  • Perform fusion splicing of optical fibres in line with established protocols and work instructions.
  • Test and inspect completed assemblies (e.g. insertion loss, return loss, continuity), recording results accurately.
  • Assemble, route, and terminate fibre components as part of device build activities.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain splicing equipment, cleavers, and test instruments, reporting any faults promptly.
  • Maintain clear and complete documentation of work carried out in accordance with company procedures.
  • Keep the work area clean, safe, and organised, adhering to health and safety and good laboratory/manufacturing practice.
  • Support the R&D, production, and quality teams with build and test evidence as required.
  • Follow all relevant quality management system procedures and contribute to their ongoing improvement.
Essential skills and experience
  • A qualification in a relevant technical or scientific discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for fine, precision work.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in both practical tasks and record-keeping.
  • Ability to read and adhere to technical drawings, follow written procedures and technical instruction carefully.
  • Basic understanding of safe working practices in a laboratory or workshop environment.
  • Competent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office.
  • Good communication and teamworking skills, with a methodical and reliable approach.
  • Hands-on experience with fibre handling and preparation including termination and fusion splicing.
  • Hands-on experience with either manual or automated fibre polishing.
  • Familiarity with optical test equipment (e.g. power meters, OTDRs, interferometers).
  • Some exposure to a regulated environment (e.g. medical devices, telecoms, or another quality-controlled setting).
  • Awareness of quality standards such as ISO 13485 or EU MDR.
  • Experience using microscopes and carrying out precision work under high magnification.
Desirable
  • Hands-on experience with fibre handling and preparation including termination and fusion splicing.
