The Role

The Fibre Engineer, reporting to the Fibre Supervisor, is responsible for installing and servicing FTTP and client CPE across multiple clients. Responsibilities include installing overhead and underground fibre, using both OR PIA and client-specific networks. Activities involve using ABF equipment, plant equipment, backfill, and reinstatement within customer boundaries, ensuring adherence to H&S standards and client specifications.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Use and maintain works tablet, fibre splicing machine, Power Meter, Fibre Identifier, and Microscope. Perform splicing within loss limits.
  • Install fibre passive components per the client specification, ensuring quality standards are met.
  • Follow company policies and procedures.
  • Report incidents and accidents immediately per the incident reporting procedure.
  • Address customer enquiries proactively, resolve issues, and gather feedback.
  • Maintain positive relationships with teams to ensure effective customer service.
  • Participate in training and upskilling of Fibre Engineers and serve as a role model for junior staff.
  • Ensure project compliance with local authority and statutory street works legislation.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Proven experience in a networking engineering environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of FTTP and FTTH technologies.
  • Experience with optical transmission equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve faults with existing equipment.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical issues from non-technical customer descriptions.
  • Experience blowing fibre, splicing, backfill, and reinstatement.
  • Experience working on the Openreach network using PIAIOSHH / NEBOSH qualification (desirable).
  • Knowledge of all HSEQ regulations.
  • Understanding of contract documentation and specifications.
