About The Role

The Heathrow Shared Apprenticeship Scheme is one of the UK’s most exciting apprenticeship programmes. The scheme provides career changing opportunities for residents close to the airport.

Job Description:

The Fencing Installer will be responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of a permanent or temporary secure boundary fence to protect people and property. Typical fencing projects will likely be securing commercial premises, secure areas, or public infrastructure. To do this, you will need to work within a team, to detailed specifications, ensuring correct and safe installation of fencing for the required site. You will likely collaborate with other trades and use a range of tools and machinery to complete the work. The projects will generally be working outdoors in a physical job role to follow industry standards to create correct fences, gates, parapets and noise barriers.

Duties typically include:

  • Assist with the installation of a range of fencing systems, including timber, concrete, metal and panel fencing.
  • Prepare work areas by measuring, setting out and marking fence lines and post positions.
  • Dig post holes and prepare foundations using appropriate hand tools and equipment.
  • Assist with installing, levelling, aligning and securing fence posts, panels, rails and gates.
  • Use hand tools, power tools and other equipment safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturer guidance.
  • Carry out basic repairs, maintenance and replacement of damaged or defective fencing components.
  • Follow drawings, specifications and instructions to ensure fencing is installed to the required standard.
  • Work safely on construction sites, following relevant health and safety procedures and wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Work effectively as part of a team while developing practical skills, technical knowledge and an understanding of fencing installation standards.

Hybrid Role - This role involves a combination of office-based work and visits to construction sites, including walking around active sites and travelling between locations. K10 Apprenticeships will consider reasonable adjustments where possible to support individuals in carrying out the essential duties of the role.

Typical Working Week

40 hours p/w with start time between 07:00 & 08:00 inclusive of paid 8 hours at college.

Person Specification

  • Proactive approach, taking pride in your work and being accountable for the quality of your work.
  • Enjoy working outdoors regardless of weather conditions and are comfortable working in a hands-on, physically active role.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of sites, tasks and working environments, understanding that no two days will necessarily be the same.
  • Practical and solutions-focused, with the initiative to get stuck in and find ways to overcome challenges on site.
  • Good attention to detail, with the ability to follow instructions, plans and specifications to ensure work is completed accurately.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside colleagues, supervisors, customers and other contractors.
  • Willingness to travel to different work sites and attend training days as required.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm to learn, with a genuine interest in developing practical fencing installation skills and working towards industry competence.
  • Able to understand and follow health and safety procedures, including the correct use of tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).

English and Maths at GCSE Grade 3 / D or above, or Functional Skills at Entry 3 or above.

Desired Requirements

The passion and commitment to become fully qualified in Groundworks. It would be advantageous if you have already completed technical certificates in construction or multi-skills, have previous related work experience and a CSCS, but this is certainly not essential.

Key Training/College Information

K10 will enrol you to the Level 2 Fencing Installer course and fund your qualifications through an accredited training provider.

The apprenticeship duration is 18 months.

To start this apprenticeship, you’ll need to be:

  • Living in England for the last 3 years and have right to work status
  • Not enrolled on any other courses
  • 18+ due to site H&S rules
