A leading healthcare institution in Liverpool is inviting applications for a one-year medical retina fellowship. This fixed-term clinical fellowship focuses on providing medical retina training, requiring at least 4 years of post-graduate training in ophthalmology. The position includes opportunities for clinical research and active participation in teaching and training activities within St Paul’s Eye Unit.
Applications are invited for a one-year medical retina fellowship. This is a fixed-term clinical fellowship intended to provide medical retina training. Prior medical retina experience isn’t essential, but at least 4 years of post-graduate training in ophthalmology is essential. Start date will be as close as possible to 1 November 2025.
The post is a 12-month fixed-term clinical fellowship based at St Paul’s Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital (RLUH), part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT). The post is clinical with two sessions per week available for study, research and audit. There will be opportunities to contribute to clinical research in medical retina and to join as a sub-investigator in a number of ongoing clinical trials in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, uveitis and inherited retinal diseases. There is a strong emphasis on active participation in weekly teaching and training activities and journal clubs.

Clinical activities include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular disease, inflammatory eye disease, inherited retinal disease, macular disease and general/acute ophthalmology. The timetable will likely include a theatre session on an alternating weekly basis to enable fellows with cataract surgery experience to maintain their skills, but this is not intended to provide training in cataract surgery. There is a commitment to the emergency eye service during working hours; the post does not include an out-of-hours commitment.
Essential qualifications: at least 4 years of post-graduate training in ophthalmology. Prior medical retina experience isn’t essential.
