Overview

The Department offers a full range of laparoscopic general, benign Upper GI surgery including laparoscopic bile duct explorations and a large bariatric practice, and a well nurtured colorectal cancer practice including eLAPE, Transanal (TEO / TEMS / TATME). This post would suit trainees wishing to consolidate their skills within the emergency general surgical remit and expand their emergency laparoscopic experience. This is an exciting opportunity for an Emergency Surgery Fellow to explore laparoscopic emergency surgery in a new and nationally leading Emergency General Surgical Unit, with full trust and support for development & training in emergency surgery in a non-pressured and educationally focused environment at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to discuss extending the contract beyond the initial 12-month appointment.

You will join a busy surgical unit in a large acute hospital Trust of around 1,000 beds, serving a resident population of approximately 550,000 and providing a wide range of elective / emergency surgical procedures. You will join our team of trainees and have the opportunity to undertake training in line with their professional and developmental needs. There is the opportunity to participate in teaching, audit, and research.

The Department of Emergency General Surgery is new to the Trust and part of a new developing specialty nationally. This unit has one of the busiest Emergency Surgical admissions nationwide, with one of the highest numbers of laparotomies undertaken according to NELA. The Trust is a Major Trauma Unit and accepts single-system trauma injuries only. The Emergency General Surgical Unit is currently run by a team of 20 laparoscopic GI surgeons, 9 Colorectal, 6 Emergency Surgeons, and 5 UGI/Bariatric/General. Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is the biggest provider of healthcare services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Our three main sites are Royal Cornwall Hospital Truro, St Michael's Hospital Hayle and West Cornwall Hospital Penzance, with staff and services available across the region.

The Trust employs 5,000+ staff, has a budget of £380 million and 750 beds. We work with health and social care organisations – including NHS Kernow and NHS England – to ensure local healthcare needs are met. We provide acute medical, surgical and specialist services to around 500,000- which can increase significantly during busy holiday periods.
