Job description

We are looking for a family office specialist to join our multi-disciplinary team to help shape our new innovative compliance approach to Wealthy individuals.

One of the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury’s key priorities for HMRC is to close the tax gap. The Government is investing in HMRC to deliver that priority. We are continuing to evolve and improve our ways of working together across HMRC to manage our tax risks more effectively and will be building on our successes and accelerating work to address some of our tax risks we believe need urgent attention.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced family office specialist to use your commercial and technical knowledge to shape HMRC’s response to non-compliance by Wealthy individuals and the complex onshore and offshore structures they control to help close the tax gap.

This is a high profile and exciting role which will require expertise, drive and commitment to contribute to the Spring Statement 2025 objective to tackle wealthy offshore non-compliance and deliver an additional £500 million over the next 5 years.

Person specification

As a Family Office Specialist, you will:

  • Apply your commercial and technical expertise to identify UK tax risks within complex international structures—such as trusts, partnerships, and corporate entities controlled by wealthy individuals, and help shape and deliver tailored compliance solutions.
  • Collaborate with strategy, risk, and policy teams to implement HMRC’s response to non-compliance, reviewing and refining investigation and risk strategies to ensure they remain effective and aligned with evolving tax landscapes.
  • Champion continuous improvement by building technical capability across the team and wider directorate—identifying knowledge gaps, supporting professional development, and delivering learning and awareness sessions.
  • Influence at senior levels, working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, Deputy Directors, and stakeholders across grades to shape strategic decisions and drive forward HMRC’s compliance agenda.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor, providing expert guidance and direction to caseworkers on complex tax and strategic issues, drawing on your deep understanding of Family Office structures and tax planning.

Please note: Some travel, including overnight stays, may be required as part of this role.

Essential Criteria:

Due to the diversity of Family Office this role is open to anyone with Tax or Financial Advisory qualifications with demonstrable advisory experience:

  • Demonstrable experience delivering high-level strategic advice to high-net-worth individuals, Family Offices, or equivalent complex financial structures, with a strong understanding of wealth management, succession planning, and international tax considerations.
  • Experience working within or advising Family Offices, with a deep understanding of their structures, governance models, and the evolving trends and risks within the Family Office landscape.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence diverse audiences, including legal and financial professionals, internal stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Experience of building the capability of yourself and others in a compliance environment.
