Job summary

Milton Keynes City Council is recruiting a Family Help Practitioner to join our Children’s Services team. Based in a Family Help Hub, you will work directly with children and families helping them achieve positive, lasting changes.

You will support families with medium to high levels of need, identify challenges early, and put in place plans to improve outcomes for children. This is a site-based role with potential for some home-working.

Qualifications

  • Has a Level three qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Understands safeguarding and legislative framework for working with children and families.
  • Communicates clearly and can build strong, trusting relationships.
  • Works well as part of a multi-agency team.
  • Can assess needs, solve problems and develop effective support plans.
  • Is organised, self-motivated and able to manage a varied workload.
  • Can write clear records and use systems confidently.

Responsibilities

  • Work within a multi-disciplinary Family Help Hub to build trusted relationships with families.
  • Carry out assessments to understand the needs and risks for children and families.
  • Develop and deliver tailored support and intervention plans.
  • Manage a caseload of families with medium to high levels of need.
  • Maintain accurate records and produce clear, high-quality reports.
  • Work closely with partner agencies to deliver joined-up support.
  • Deliver parenting programmes to support confidence and behaviour management.
  • Complete regular visits and monitor progress against plans.

Roles are either ‘site based’ or ‘home based’.

Site based roles are mainly based at the workplace, with the option to work from home for up to two days a week, depending on service needs.

Home based roles are mainly based at home, with the expectation of attending the workplace up to one day a week.

The working arrangement for each role is set by the manager, based on service requirements.

Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a part-time and full-time Family Help Practitioner to join our Children’s Services team at Milton Keynes City Council.

You’ll be based in a Family Help Hub, working directly with children and families who need support. This is a rewarding, front-line role where you’ll build strong relationships, act as a consistent point of contact, and help families make positive and lasting changes.

Site-Based role

This is a Site-Based role, and you’ll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Ideal Candidate

  • Is organised, self‑motivated and able to manage a varied workload
  • Can write clear records and use systems confidently

Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we’ll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use. We’re unable to confirm an appointment until these documents are received.

As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we’ll carry out an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, (unless you are currently registered with the DBS Update Service).
