Job description

Family Dairy Farm Herdsperson job - Somerset

Due to our long-term herdsman retiring, we are looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic herdsperson to join our family dairy farm near Frome, Somerset.

We operate an autumn block calving system (August - October) consisting of around 160 cows milked twice a day. The cows are paddock grazed throughout the summer where we focus on milk from forage. In winter, the cows are cubicle housed and fed a ration of grass and maize silage supplemented with a blend.

Milking is through a Fullwood 9:18 milking parlour with acrs, auto identification/feeding, and auto wash. There is a segregation gate and handling facilities.

Cow manager ear tags are used as an aid for heat and health detection.

The role includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Milking
  2. Record keeping
  3. Dairy hygiene
  4. Herd health
  5. Calving
  6. A small amount of yard work
  7. Foot trimming
  8. AI if qualified

We have a two-bedroom, double glazed and central heated cottage on the farm with a large garden which is currently being renovated, if required.

Working days/hours to be discussed.

Competitive salary for the right person. References will be required.
