Job description
Overview

Cafcass requires a Qualified Social Worker to join their Work to the First Hearing team. The role can be flexibly based in Peterborough, Chelmsford, Leicester, Lincoln or Norfolk. Suitable candidates must have a degree in social work and at least 2–3 years post-qualification experience working in a Children’s Team with Court experience.

About Cafcass

Cafcass is the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service. Cafcass usually becomes involved in child proceedings once an application is submitted to the court. The role of Cafcass is to safeguard and promote the welfare of children by considering their needs, wishes and feelings in child cases. The court typically asks Cafcass advisors to work with families and advise the family court of the interests, needs, wishes and feelings of a child.

Responsibilities (Section 7 and Section 37 reports)
  • A Section 7 report is requested by the court to assist in reaching a decision on a child proceedings case concerning the welfare of a child. The report helps the court consider a family dispute between the parents and determine an outcome.
  • A Cafcass Section 7 report may be needed in matters such as:
  • Child Arrangements Order – determining who the child lives with and who has contact; for information on contact orders see the related page.
  • Prohibited Steps Order – preventing one parent from certain actions or decisions without the other parent’s permission.
  • Specific Issue Order – determining a specific question arising in relation to a child.
  • The report will contain background information, key facts and, most importantly, the child’s needs and wishes in line with the Welfare Checklist. The Cafcass officer or social services will typically see the child and interview both parents separately. The section 7 report includes the officer’s findings and recommendations for the family court to consider when making an order.
  • A Section 37 report is prepared when the courts are concerned about a child’s welfare. The court may direct a local authority to investigate the child’s circumstances and report findings to the court. The author of the report will be a qualified professional social worker with experience in dealing with children and families, and the report may be prepared by Cafcass or the local authority.
What to expect in the interview process

The report will include the officer’s findings after interviews with the parents and the child. If you are interested in this position, please apply or send your CV to Rebecca Knight or contact the recruiter for more information.
